In addition to her stellar musical ability, Lorde has become known for making bold, often uncensored comments about other artists. The 17-year-old New Zealand singer continued that practice in a recent interview with Interview Magazine, commenting on the music of Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Lana Del Rey.
Speaking about the 2012 beginnings of her "Love Club" EP, Lorde discussed the state of music at the time. "Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn't relate to me -- or anyone that I knew," she said.
Lorde took it a step further, adding, "I began thinking, 'How are we listening to this? It's completely irrelevant.'"
The "Royals" singer made headlines earlier this year when she criticized Taylor Swift for her "unattainable" image and spoke out against Selena Gomez's "Come & Get It" single from a feminist standpoint. In an interview with MTV back in October, Lorde defended her right to express opinions on today's pop stars.
"I think there's a funny culture in music that's only happened over the last 15 years, that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn't 100-percent good, you're a 'hater,' even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds for that critique," she said. "People will say exactly what they think about a movie or a TV show, and that's fine, but as soon as you say it about a record, you're like some little zombie in a funny dungeon."
